- Description
-
"Grimdark" is a subgenre of speculative fiction or a stylistic tone characterized by an intensely dystopian, amoral, and violent atmosphere. It describes a world where there are no true heroes, the setting is bleak and hopeless, and the narrative often focuses on the darker aspects of human (or alien) nature. The term originated from the tagline of Warhammer 40,000 ("In the grim darkness of the far future...") and has since become a shorthand for any media that is perceived as excessively edgy or nihilistic. It is often used to critique stories that seem to be trying too hard to be "adult" by including gratuitous suffering.
- Example
-

>The movie went full grimdark in the second act, killing off almost every likable character for shock value.
