Description

"Save scumming" is gaming slang for repeatedly reloading a previous save to undo an unfavorable outcome and try the situation again. The expression is informal and often mildly self-deprecating or disapproving, because it acknowledges that the player is avoiding the consequences of a failed attempt. It is especially common in games where manual saves, random outcomes, and costly tactical mistakes make retries tempting. Players may also use it apologetically when a bug or technical problem makes reloading feel justified.

Example

— You lost the boss fight because you challenged it with one health point left. — I prefer to call it save scumming with strategic optimism. — That is the same save file you loaded six times.

The wizard’s save scumming turned a supposedly heroic dungeon run into a carefully edited highlight reel where every embarrassing skeleton attack mysteriously never happened.

The performance not so much. In the age of ram shortages I really wish they would get this optimized. 15 hours in and only 1 battle got stuck in a turn so sorry for save scumming.
