Description

"Button mashing" is gaming slang for repeatedly pressing attack or action buttons rapidly instead of choosing deliberate inputs. The phrase is usually critical when it describes combat that rewards frantic repetition more than timing, positioning, or strategy. It is familiar among players and often contrasts with systems that make each attack feel controlled or purposeful. Depending on context, the phrase can be playful rather than harsh, especially when someone is admitting that panic made them hammer the controller.

Example

— How did you defeat the final boss? — I had a strategy for the first three seconds. — And after that? — Pure button mashing and spiritual commitment.

The tournament champion abandoned every elegant combo and won by button mashing so enthusiastically that the controller looked ready to file a workplace complaint.

I'd say I vastly prefer it to Witcher 3's combat, which always felt a bit like a button mashing fest after a while. I'm sure there's some tweaks to be had here and there, but I love it so far.
