Description

This term refers to the act of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or moral correctness on a particular issue. It is often used critically to suggest that the person is more interested in looking like a good person than actually taking meaningful action. The register is frequently cynical and is used across the political spectrum to dismiss opponents' statements as performative.

Example

> Posting a black square on Instagram without donating or volunteering is just pure virtue signaling.

> I'm tired of corporate virtue signaling every time a holiday comes around while they treat their workers poorly.
